To produce a cement mould for the keel, into which the liquid cement is poured later on, we first of all need an exact wooden copy of the lead keel.

The wooden model keel must have the exact same shape as the actual keel and so requires a great deal of fine detail work. The wooden surface must be evened out using filler before we can even begin sanding

Points for hanging

On the finished wooden model - here with the beautifully curved edge of the keel - you can clearly see the hanging points for the wooden box.

Negative shell

Basis for the lead keel

This negative cement shell is made up of two pieces and serves as the mould for the actual lead keel.

Scale

The scale and weight of this cement model should not be underestimated. A solid steel framework is needed to contain it.

With this negative cement shell a specialized company is then casting the keel of the yacht.

The bolts are covered in grease so that they can be easily tightened after the keel has been bonded to the hull, and to ensure these connecting points are perfectly water-tight.
